The total capacity of a vendor is most often not as important as their available capacity. Even knowing the available capacity can be inaccurate, providing a false sense of the vendor’s capacity. Therefore, knowing the vendor’s expansion capability is more important than anything else.

Over Time Run

Involves an overtime shift of employees to increase production output.

This expansion could be completed within seconds of its start, adding on an additional 20% to the normal capacity. This system would be dependent on our employee’s cooperation and procurement capabilities.

Second Shift or Production Line Expansion

Involves a temporary addition of employees to fill additional shifts.

This expansion would require one to two weeks to complete. A longer time is needed for incorporation due to the time needed to train new employees. The estimated expandable capacity is another 40% above the normal. This system would be dependent on our training and procurement capabilities.

Sub-contracting

Involves partial contracting from a vendor to add on to current company capability.

This expansion would require anywhere from one day to a few weeks, depending on the type of work needed to be done. The estimated expandable capacity is an additional 20 to 40 percent above the normal. This expansion would be dependent on our engineering system, vendor survey system, a quality control system, and procurement system.
